HelloBaby: A Bright Spot for Families in Woodlawn and Beyond

As featured in an interview with Jackie Kostek on CBS Chicago’s Morning Jump Start program, HelloBaby is a vibrant nonprofit making a big difference in Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood. For seven years, this free, one-of-a-kind playspace has provided a safe, joyful environment for babies, toddlers, and their caregivers, creating a haven in areas that often lack accessible and secure play spaces.

“HelloBaby is a play escape,” said Tamika Baker, HelloBaby manager, during the interview. “It’s a place where kids can come with their parents or caregivers to play, laugh, and learn in a safe and nurturing environment.” From bright craft tables to literacy corners and even a mini roller coaster, the space is designed to engage and delight young children. “Play is how babies learn,” added Jennifer Mosley, board president. “In those first three years, when brain growth is at its peak, having a space like this is critical.”

In addition to play, HelloBaby supports families with essentials like diapers, wipes, and clothing. “If you need something, you can take it. No strings attached,” Tamika shared. This mission of generosity extends to their literacy program, which gives away $10,000 worth of books annually to help families build their home libraries. “We’re helping kids build a love of reading early, and that’s so important for their future,” said Ted Ratliff, a literacy advocate and teacher at Chicago Lab Schools.

HelloBaby’s success has fueled its expansion. “We’re thrilled to announce that our second location will open in Avalon Park next summer,” shared Maya Jefferson, HelloBaby assistant manager. The new space is part of a larger vision to address “play deserts” across Chicago, with a plan to open five additional locations in underserved neighborhoods. Maia emphasized, “This means thousands more play visits, local job creation, and a deeper investment in our communities.”

Families visiting HelloBaby find more than just a play space; they find connection and support. “HelloBaby isn’t just about fun—it’s about creating a sense of belonging,” said Tamika.
